QUITTING SMOKING: CESSATION ASSISTANCE

By Province

Cessation Advice and Assistance from Health Professionals

Among current smokers surveyed in 2010, three-quarters had visited a doctor in the past 12 months, while six in ten had visited a dentist, and less than half had talked with a pharmacist (Figure 6.4).

Of those who had visited health professionals, smokers visiting doctors received advice most often (Figure 6.5). Of smokers who had visited a doctor in the past year, 56% received advice to quit smoking, compared to 38% of those who visited a dentist, and 18% of those who had talked to a pharmacist. Since 2003, these rates appear to have increased slowly for doctors and dentists, and remained fairly stable for pharmacists.

However, of those who visited and received advice to quit, more received information about quitting assistance from pharmacists (79%), compared to doctors (64%) or dentists (36%) (Figure 6.6).
