Smoking Prevalence

In 2010, smoking prevalence in Alberta was 18.8%, above the national average of 16.7%.

Figure 2.6 shows smoking prevalence, overall and by sex, in Alberta from 1999-2010. Prevalence generally declined until 2003 and has been fairly stable since then. Males had similar or greater prevalence than females in all but one of the years observed.

Figure 2.7 shows smoking prevalence by age group in Alberta, from 1999-2010. During this time, smoking prevalence decreased substantially in all age groups except those over 45, for whom smoking prevalence remained between 15 and 20% in most years.
